English Language Learners (ELL) at Prussing:
An English Language Learner is someone who comes from a non-English speaking home or background. As of 2017, nearly 29% of Prussing's student population is comprised of ELL students. Languages such as Polish, Arabic, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Bosnian, among a few others are represented at Prussing.
ELL Identification and Placement:
To determine if a student qualifies as ELL, parents or guardians of the child must complete a Home Language Survey. Students will automatically be identified if "yes" was answered on any of the questions on the survey. The Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State (ACCESS) WIDA assessment must be administered to students to determine their levels of proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
**Students are eligible to exit the program. Parents/guardians can have their child withdrawn from the program or refuse services. The state of Illinois defined an overall score of 5.0 on the overall portion of the ACCESS test, as well as a 4.2 for both reading and writing (Meeks and Smith, 2016, p. 12).
ESL/Bilingual Program at Prussing:
Prussing follows two models, the Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) and Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI).

An analysis was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the two programs. Overall, the programs provide students with appropriate services and support, but areas of improvement have been identified as well. Students in this subgroup receive modification and accommodations in the core content areas based on their level of proficiency. The linguistic, academic, and affective needs are met for this group of students because they have the opportunity to learn about their culture and use their native language. However, there is only one primary bilingual teacher. Not every teacher in the building has their ESL endorsement. It would be ideal if Prussing could hire more bilingual teachers, or teachers with ESL endorsements.
